Porch theft: Trends and prevention ahead of the holidays

The figures are eye-opening. As noted in the 2025 Package Theft Report from Security.org, package thieves made off with $8.2 billion in online delivery orders in 2025. In all, around 25% of Americans have been a victim of this crime at some point in their lives.

Porch pirates are clearly still an issue, especially during the busy holiday season, but you don't need to be a victim! Discover how a layered strategy and current smart home technology can keep your parcels safe in Olympia.

Layered security keeps Olympia package thieves away

Holidays are stressful enough with scheduling headaches, travel delays, budgets stretched to the limit, and inlaws who test your nerves. The last thing you need is a pilfered package to push you over the edge. So, how do you prevent it? Ordering a video doorbell is a good idea, but there’s more to preventing package theft.

A layered strategy can include:

• Video cameras around your home’s border. Let trespassers know someone’s watching.
• Security signs and decals. It’s simple but still a proven deterrent.
• Motion-sensing lights. A sudden burst of light is usually enough to frighten criminals off. Just remember, porch theft takes place at all hours.
• Getting to know your neighbors. It’s not merely about the security devices you have. Neighbors should watch out for each other and flag questionable behavior.

Modern technology strengthens your defense

Home security keeps evolving. You can use these advancements to stop porch theft at your Olympia home. Here are some worth considering:

• Video doorbells with two-way talk. Tell delivery people where to leave packages or determine why someone’s on your doorstep.
• Smart locks and custom automation. Today’s home security systems can be operated from wherever you are. Unlock your front door or open your garage, tell the courier put packages inside, and then secure the entrance when they’re done.
• Video cameras with active deterrence. You’ll come across outdoor and doorbell cameras that trigger warning lights or sounds if a lurker ventures too close.

Make smart delivery choices

A layered strategy and modern devices will help prevent package theft, but you can also help yourself by selecting optional delivery services. For example:

• Require a signature. This is a wise choice, especially for high-value items. Your packages will never be left unattended.
• Give instructions. Let drivers know where you would like boxes dropped off and keep them hidden from view.
• Reroute packages. Send more expensive deliveries to another location, like your office or a self-service storage locker. Providers like Amazon have secure lockers in Olympia where you can grab deliveries.
